PHRASE AND SENTENCE IN ENGLISH GRAMMER PART1

 PHRASE AND SENTENCE:

PHRASE:

Phrases are made of two or more words. They don’t have a subject or a verb and make some sense only but not complete sense.

Examples:

  • by the way

  • in private

  • in the garden 

  • in a minute

  • at school

  • in the end

  • at home

  • once more

  • at the bus stop

  • once upon a time

  • on the whole

  • without fear

etc.


sentence:

a sentence is a  group of words that contains a main verb and carries some meaning.

if begins with a capital letter and end with a full stop, a question mark or a mark of exclamation.

There are four tyes of sentences :

They are:

  1. Statement or Declarative sentence

  2. Question or  Interrogative sentence

  3. Command or Imperative Sentence

  4. Exclamatory Sentence


1.Statement or Declarative sentence:

A sentence that makes a statement or declares something is called a Statement or Declarative sentence.

Examples:

  • I am a student.

  • The earth is oval in shape.

  • stars are balls of fire.

  • India Gate is in Delhi.


2. Question or  Interrogative sentence

A sentence that asks a question is called a Question or  Interrogative sentence.

It ends with a question mark(?).

Example:

  • Are you going to Schol?

  • Where doyou live?

  • Where does your father work?

  • Where is my bicycle?

  • Are you happy?


3 .Command or Imperative Sentence

A Sentence that expresses

 a command(Get lost from here.) ,

 a request(please lend me a pen.) , 

wish(get well soon.),

 Advise(Always speak the truth.),

,Prohibition(do not run on the road.) 

,suggestion or a desire is called a Command or Imperative Sentence.


Examples:

  • Take care of  your health.

  • Be quiet .

  • Please open the door.

  • Shut down the computer.

  • Let’s go for a walk.



4. Exclamatory Sentence:

A sentence that expresses a strong or sudden feeling is called an Exclamatory Sentence. An exclamatory sentence contains a mark of exclamation(!).

Examples:

  • Alas!His father is no more.

  • Aha!What a pretty flower.

  • What a beautiful sight!

  • oh!you are hurt badly.

  • Hurrah!I have won the game.



Conclusion:

  • Every sentence begins with a capital letter.

  • Both declarative and imperative sentences end with a full stop.

  • An interrogative sentence end with a question mark.(?)

  • An exclamatory sentence endwith a mark of  exclamation(!)


NOTE:

In imperative sentence the subject is left out . For example , in Sit down.

the subject you is left out ,but understood.


PARTS OF SENTENCE:

  1. SUBJECT

  2. PREDICATE


SUBJECT:

A person or thing spoken about is called the subject.

What we speak about that person or thing is called the predicate.

Example:

(bold were subject)(remaining were predicate)

  • Jane came and banged the door shut.

  • You are a little girl.

  • That lady looked happily at the tiny tree.

  • Peter came in hurrying from the rain,
